choose your own journey

"I want the bicycle!" This is usually how reading Choose Your Own Journey goes with both Josh and Micah. The premise of this story is that you choose the path of one of four vehicles - boat, train, car, or bike - and follow its path through a journey.

Of course, the bike has the longest journey, so it's what both boys tend to choose.

Choose Your Own Journey - a Kane Miller book written by Susie Brooks and Tracy Cottingham - is engaging, not only for its unconventional storytelling method, but also because of its detailed, colorful illustrations. There aren't many words in this book; the pictures tell the story.

It's that book you go back to read again as soon as you've finished it.
Book benefits:
  • four journeys make for fresh re-readings, even after the initial voyage
  • cut-out tunnel holes on multiple pages add intrigue
  • fine motor skills developed by following a path with your finger
  • bright, detailed illustrations add depth to exploration!

This is a book that's fun to read together but can also hold a child's interest independently, with a multi-layered world to explore. Inevitably, when we get to the last page where the bicyclist finally makes her way home, Josh and Micah say, "now I want the car!" ...and we start all over again.
